WAFCON 2024 Qualifiers: Super Falcons comeback in comprehensive aggregate victory over Cape Verde

WAFCON 2024 Qualifiers: Super Falcons edge closer with comfortable victory over Cape Verde

The Super Falcons came from a goal down to defeat Cape Verde 2-1 in the second leg of their final 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and 7-1 on aggregate.

The most successful African women’s football team thumped the tiny island nation 5-0 in the first leg in Abuja last week but fell behind in Praia when the hosts took the lead in the 14th minute.

It remained that way until the 62nd minute when substitute Esther Okoronkwo, who scored a brace in the first leg off the bench as well, leveled matters. She had found the back of the net earlier in the 55th minute but her effort was ruled out for offside.

Still determined for the win despite the comfortable aggregate lead, Atletico Madrid Femenino forward Rasheedat Ajibade popped up with the winner in the added time to complete the comeback.

The victory sends the Falcons to their 12th consecutive tournament outing, continuing their record as the only team to have featured in every WAFCON tournament since it began in 1998.

They will also be looking to win their first title since 2018 after seeing the 2022 edition go to South Africa.
