UCL: Bayern, Inter to face off in huge quarterfinal clash after round of 16 victories

Bayern Munich and Inter Milan will once again meet each other in the UEFA Champions League, with both sides set for a crunch quarterfinal clash, Afrosport reports.

Bayern on Tuesday recorded a 2-0 win at rivals Bayer Leverkusen to progress past the round of 16 5-0 on aggregate, while Inter dispatched Feyenoord 2-1 at home to seal a 4-1 win over two legs.

The Bundesliga leaders got two second-half goals from Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies at BayArena, with the former bagging his 10th goal in the competition this season.

Kane opened the scoring for the Bavarians in the 52nd minute, with the Englishman tapping into an empty net after Leverkusen’s defence failed to deal with a Joshua Kimmich set piece.

Vincent Kompany’s men doubled their lead in the 71st minute with a well-taken volley from Davies, who found himself inside the Leverkusen box and was picked out perfectly by a cross from Kane.

Meanwhile, at San Siro, Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu scored either side of a Jakub Moder penalty for Inter to keep their European dreams alive.

Thuram broke the deadlock in the eighth minute with a fine solo goal, firing a powerful effort into the top corner after breaking in from the left side and dancing through the Feyenoord defence.

The Dutch side, however, drew level three minutes before the halftime break as Moder beat Yann Sommer from 12 yards after the referee had given a penalty for a foul on the Polish midfielder by Francesco Acerbi.

Inter restored their lead six minutes into the second half through Calhanoglu, who scored his own spot-kick after Mehdi Taremi was brought down in the box.

Bayern and Inter will meet in the knockout phase of the Champions League for the first time since the 2010/11 season, when the Italian giants knocked the Germans out in the round of 16 on away goals.

The two teams have previously met seven times in the competition’s history, with Bayern holding the upper hand with four wins compared to Inter’s two, while the only draw in this fixture was a 1-1 scoreline in the group stages in the 2006-07 season.
