Gambia booked their place in the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup knockout phase following their 2-1 Group F win over France while Tunisia earned their first win of the tournament by defeating Iraq 3-0 in Group E.
The Young Scorpions were victorious in their opener against Honduras, winning by the same 2-1 scoreline.
In Wednesday’s encounter in Mendoza, the Gambians took the lead in the 13th minute when Banhie Zoukrou scored scored an own goal. The West Africans had the opportunity to extend their lead from the penalty spot in the 57th minute but Alagie Saine missed.
France went on to equalise on the hour mark courtesy of Wilson Odobert but it didn’t take to long for the Gambians to restore their lead as substitute Mamin Sanyang popped up with the winner with a close range effort that found its way into the bottom left corner of the net.
Gambia now joins the United States, Colombia, Nigeria, England and hosts Argentina in booking their spot in the round of 16 with their final Group game to come against South Korea in Mendoza on Sunday.

In Group E, Tunisia booked their first win of the tournament with a 3-0 victory over fellow Arab side Tunisia.
All the goals came in the second half courtesy of Youssef Snana, Chaim El Djebali and Mahmoud Ghorbel. The North Africans were however reduced to 10 men after Rayan Nasraoui received a straight red card for a foul.

The Young Carthage Eagles will have a chance to book their spot in round of 16 when they take on Uruguay in their final group game in Mendoza on Sunday.
