Quincy Promes: Ex-Ajax winger to serve seven-and-a-half year prison sentence

Quincy Promes will serve a seven-and-a-half year prison sentence after he was extradited to the Netherlands for drug trafficking and aggravated assault, Afrosport reports.

The former Ajax winger, who was arrested in Dubai last week following a request by the Dutch police, was previously sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin in the knee in 2020.

He was then sentenced to six years in jail in February last year for smuggling more than a tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands from Belgium in the same year.

The 33-year-old is yet to serve jail time for both charges which he denies and has filed for an appeal.

Promes’ career started at Twente in 2009, spending time on loan at Go Ahead Eagles before moving to Russian side Spartak Moscow in 2012 and spent four years. He then joined La Liga side Sevilla, spending one year before returning to the Eredivisie to play for Ajax.

Promes was back in Russia with Spartak Moscow in 2001 and moved to the United Arab Emirates last year to play for Dubai United before his arrest.

He has been capped 50 times for the Netherlands national team, scoring seven goals and providing as many assists.

He featured in the inaugural UEFA Nations League campaign in 2018-19 and the Euro 2020 championship.
