Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa has called for urgent and comprehensive reforms in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), challenging football authorities to address the deep-rooted structural and operational flaws stalling the growth of Nigerian club football,Afrosport reports.

Reacting via his official X handle to the impressive performances of African clubs at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, the former Leicester City and Al-Nassr winger applauded their success but used the moment to spotlight Nigeria’s conspicuous absence from the global stage.

Musa expressed pessimism about Nigerian clubs, given the current state of the domestic league, he said, the league has continued to lag behind due to systemic failures.

He noted that while the country is rich in football talent, that alone is no longer enough. The lack of proper organisation, sustainable investment, and visionary leadership in the NPFL, has left clubs struggling to perform beyond the local scene. He pointed to poor governance, weak financial structures, and a general absence of long-term planning as key obstacles preventing Nigerian clubs from building competitive and enduring legacies.

The former CSKA Moscow man also raised serious concerns about the declining standard of officiating in the league. He lamented the absence of Nigerian referees in top-tier CAF and FIFA competitions, describing it as a symptom of wider issues related to inadequate training, lack of integrity, and weak regulatory oversight.
