Ligue 1: Ghana’s Gideon Mensah extends contract with Auxerre until 2026

Ghanaian defender Gideon Mensah has signed a one-year contract extension with Ligue 1 club Auxerre, securing his stay at the club until 2026, Afrosport reports.

The left-back joined Auxerre in 2022 from Austrian club RB Salzburg on an initial three-year deal with his present deal set to expire in 2025.

However, following a string of brilliant performances with Auxerre, including helping them win the Ligue 2 title and gain promotion to the top division, the French club has opted to hold on to him for at least one more year.

The Ghana iinternational, who has also had loan stints at Zulte Waregem, Vitoria de Guimaraes, and Bordeaux, has played 55 matches for Auxerre, who are currently 12th in the Ligue 1 standings.

The 26-year-old has not featured much this season, with only one appearance under his belt. Having recently recovered from a knee injury, he missed Auxerre’s first five league games but played 24 minutes in their 3-0 win over Brest on Saturday.

Mensah has represented Ghana numerous times on the international stage, making 26 appearances since he made his debut in 2019. The defender has played for the Black Stars in both FIFA World Cup and at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Malian forward Lassine Sinayoko also penned a new one-year contract extension until 2026 with Auxerre.
