Golden State Warriors: Where does the 52-point defeat to Celtics rank in franchise history

The Golden State Warriors entered Sunday night’s game at TD Garden in Boston off the back of an eight-game road winning run and an 11-2 record in their previous thirteen games.

However, the Celtics, who boast the league’s best record, had other ideas as Joe Mazzulla’s side handed Golden State one of their worst defeats in franchise history, beating them 140-88 with a 52-point margin.

The Celtics claimed the third-biggest win margin in the history of their franchise as they cruised to their eleventh consecutive win and improved to 48-12 for the regular season.

The Warriors, on the other hand, made undesired history, as the 52-point blowout defeat was the fourth-worst in franchise history, including both regular-season and playoff games.

The Sunday night game in Boston was also the worst loss the Warriors franchise has suffered during the regular season or playoffs when their “Big”Three”—Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green—have all started a game. It beats the 39-point defeat they suffered at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 5 of the 2022 Western Conference semifinals.

The seven-time NBA champions suffered the worst defeat in franchise history on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1971–72 season in a 63-point defeat, followed by a 56-point home loss to the Lakers in the 1972–73 season and a 53-point defeat to the Toronto Raptors in the 2020–21 season.

They have also suffered eight of their ten worst defeats away from home, with four of those, by chance, coming against 17-time champions, the Boston Celtics.

Having ended their run of four-road games, Golden State will take a two-day rest before returning to Chase Center for a three-game homestead, beginning with a test against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night.
