French Open: Jabeur defeats Leylah Fernandez to advance into fourth round

Jabeur

Ons Jabeur progressed into the French Open fourth round after her straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Canada’s Leylah Fernandez on Friday.

The Tunisian needed three sets to defeat Colombian Maria Camila Osorio in the previous round and faced another tough battle against Fernandez.

Jabeur was able to save Fernandez’s break point in the forth game before the Canadian saved three of her opponent’s breakpoints in the fifth game.

Fernandez was the first to blink in the seventh game of the first set as she broke Jabeur’s serve. The Canadian was however able to hit back immediately in the next game only for her ninth seed opponent to strike back in the ninth game, leaving Jabeur to serve for the set which she claimed in 47 minutes.

The second set saw Jabeur’s serve broken in the fourth game but the 2023 Wimbledon finalist was able to hit back in the next game, taking the set all the way to a tie break which she won 7-5.

The 29-year-old will face Denmark’s Clara Tauson for a chance to make it into back-to-back quarter-finals.
