Cameroon duo Mbeumo, Matip hit with injuries

The Cameroonian duo of Bryan Mbeumo and Joel Matip have been hit with injuries having featuring on Wednesday night and last weekend respectively for Brentford and Liverpool.

Mbeumo scored for the Bees from the penalty spot in their 2-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion and had to be taken off after 40 minutes because of an ankle injury and was replaced by DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank did not go into specifics of how serious the injury is and will need further assessment.

“He twisted his ankle. We don’t know exactly bad it is; we will assess him,” Frank said after the Brighton game.

“It’s another one on the list but that happens; another player may now need to step up.

“But let’s not get too carried away. Let’s wait and see how good or bad it is.”

Matip meanwhile started for the Reds in their epic 4-3 win over Fulham last weekend. He was however taken off after 69 minutes and replaced by Ibrahima Konate.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has now confirmed the 32-year-old has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

“It’s an ACL, ruptured, so that’s what I unfortunately expected from the first second. Everything looked like that. Very unfortunate,” Klopp said after his side’s 2-0 victory at Sheffield United on Wednesday night.

Liverpool’s victory kept them in second place on the Premier League table, two points behind leaders Arsenal while Brentford sit in 11th place, tied on 19 points with fellow London clubs West Ham United and Chelsea who occupy ninth and 10th spot respectively.
