Nigeria’s senior women’s team, the Super Falcons, has been shortlisted as one of the ten nominees for the best national women’s team at the 2023 CAF Awards, slated for December 11 in Marrakech, Morocco.
The nine-time African champions finished fourth at the last edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in 2022 and were one of the four representatives of the continent at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The Falcons made a record eighth appearance at the Mundial, extending their record as the African side with the most Women’s World Cup appearances and also becoming one of the seven countries with the most outings at the tournament.

Led by American manager Randy Waldrum, the Falcons got to the knockout phase of the tournament having finished second in Group B behind co-hosts Australia. Along with Morocco and South Africa, they made history at the Mundial as three African nations qualified from the group phase of a particular edition of the competition for the first time ever.
The Super Falcons were eventually defeated on penalty shootouts by eventual finalists England in the round of 16, but the side gave a good account of themselves at the Mundial in Oceania.
Nigeria will ward off competition from nine other teams, including Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ghana, Malawi, Senegal, Tanzania, 2023 Women’s World Cup debutants Zambia and Morocco, and reigning WAFCON winners the Banyana Banyana of South Africa.
