Australia Open: Sinner dominates Zverev to win third Grand Slam title

World number one Jannik Sinner on Sunday clinched his second straight Australian Open title by dominating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the men’s singles final in Melbourne, Afrosport reports.

Sinner saw off Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in straight sets in a battle of the men’s top seeds to take home the $2.2 million prize money.

The 23-year-old Italian claimed his third Grand Slam title and his second in the Australia Open, having also won the last edition.

“It’s an incredible tournament for me, I hope I can keep it going,” said Sinner, who is the first Italian player to win three majors.

Sinner claimed victory with a cross-court winner on his first championship point, ensuring Zverev ended the game without creating a single break point in the match.

Zverev, who won $1.2 million for finishing second, becomes the seventh man in the Open era to lose his first three Grand Slam finals, adding to his previous losses at the US Open and French Open in 2020 and 2024, respectively.

“It sucks standing next to this trophy,” the 27-year-old German said. “I was hoping to be more competitive but Jannik was just too good – as simple as that.”

Sinner, who is still battling an ongoing doping case, which has put most of his victories under the microscope, currently has an 80-6 win-loss record since the start of 2024.

He joins an elite list of men’s tennis players to have won three straight hardcourt major titles, including Jon McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
