AFCON 2023: Why Jean-Louis Gasset won’t get a medal with Ivory Coast

French coach Jean-Louis Gasset will not be getting any medal for Ivory Coast’s success at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The competitions department of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), confirmed that the mutual termination of Gasset’s contract in the group stage will not allow him to add to his list of coaching achievements.

Gasset led the Elephants into the tournament that’s been staged on home soil but he was booted out due to poor results in the group stage.

The 70-year-old managed a run of a win and two losses as the Elephants finished third in Group A with three points from three games.

The Ivorian Football Federation parted ways with Gasset after Ivory Coast suffered a humiliating 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea in their final group game on January 22.

He was replaced by his assistant Emerse Fae who has now led the Elephants into the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ivory Coast will play Nigeria in the final on Sunday, either the win their third AFCON title or lose in front of home fans in Abidjan, Fae’s men are assured of medals at the end of the game.

The Elephants last played an AFCON final in 2015 when they defeated Ghana 9-8 on penalties after a goalless draw at the end of extra-time.
