AFCON 2023: ‘There is no small team in Africa’ – Cameroon’s Aboubakar

Cameroon forward Vincent Aboubakar says there is no small team in Africa and should therfore not be underestimated at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Besiktas forward will be part of the Indomitable Lions squad that will go up against Guinea, the Gambia and reigning champions Senegal in Group C which is considered the ‘Group of Death’.

Cameroon will be gunning for a sixth AFCON and Aboubakar, who was part of the last winning side in 2017, stated that Rigobert Song’s side are ready to compete.

“Of course, Cameroon is ready to start the Africa Cup of Nations and we came prepared. Everything is going well within the group and we are ready to compete,” Aboubakar told the CAF website.

“It is difficult to make a prediction for AFCON because all teams are motivated and good. We will not underestimate any team because there are no small teams in Africa. We will do our best to stay in the competition for as long as possible.”

When asked if he has sights on finishing as AFCON top scorer like he did at the last edition on home soil with eight goals, Aboubakar said: “The ambition is more collective. I personally participated in three editions of the AFCON and won the 2017 title and finished third in 2021. What matters most to me is helping my country and my teammates reach the furthest place possible.”

Cameroon will begin their AFCON 2023 campaign against Guinea in Yamoussoukro on Monday.
