Abubakar Lawal: Uganda’s Vipers SC to hold memorial service for late Nigerian forward

Ugandan club Vipers SC will hold a special memorial service in honour of late Nigerian forward Abubakar Lawal, the club announced on Tuesday.

The six-time Ugandan champions revealed that the proposed event will take place at their home ground, the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, on Thursday, 27 February.

Vipers also added that the ceremony will be made open to the public, allowing fans and well-wishers to pay their final respects.

Lawal’s demise was announced on Monday, with Ugandan police reportedly investigating the death of the 29-year-old.

The former Kano Pillars forward allegedly fell from third-floor balcony at the Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala, where he had gone to visit a Tanzanian friend.

Lawal, who joined Vipers in July 2022 after a two-year stint with AS Kigali in Rwanda, helped the Ugandan side to the league and cup double in 2023.

Meanwhile, Vipers announced that the body of the Nigerian forward will be sent to Sokoto State in Nigeria as requested by his family.

Club President, Dr Lawrence Mulindwa, has pledged to cover all costs involved, and the necessary documentation is currently being processed.
