Monaco on Thursday condemned racist insults directed at Ivorian defender Wilfried Singo following his collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in a Ligue 1 match on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.
Donnarumma suffered a serious facial injury after he was caught by Singo’s studs during PSG’s 4-2 win away at Monaco, and the Italian required 10 staples due to the lacerations he sustained on the right side of his face.
Monaco, however, announced that Singo has since been subjected to racist abuse on social media due to the incident, with the club condemning the “unacceptable racists comments” and pledging support to the Ivory Coast international.
“Wilfried Singo, one of our own,” the French club wrote on X. “We strongly condemn the unacceptable racist comments made about Wilfried Singo on social networks after last night’s match against Paris Saint-Germain.
“Such behavior has no place in sport, either on or off the pitch, and is in total contradiction with the values upheld by the Club. The club offers its full support to Wilfried.”
Singo, meanwhile has tendered an apology to Donnarumma after Wednesday’s incident as the 23-year-old took to social media on Thursday to apologise to the former AC Milan shot-stopper, wishing him a “speedy recovery.”
“I’d like to apologise to Gianluigi Donnarumma. My act was obviously not intentional, but I was able to see afterwards that he had a serious injury to his face,” Singo wrote on Instagram.
Donnarumma was replaced in the 22nd minute by Russian Matvey Safonov following the challenge, with a statement from PSG confirming the goalkeeper will undergo medical tests on Thursday and will be out for “several days.”
The two players were pictured in the tunnel exchanging pleasantries after the game at the Stade Louis II, with Donnarumma pictured telling the Ivory Coast international that “everything’s fine, no worries.”
