AFCON 2023: Three Nigerians confirmed dead during Nigeria vs South Africa game

Three Nigerians have been confirmed dead while watching the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final game between Nigeria and South Africa on Wednesday.

An Igbo businessman identified as Chief Osondu ‘Angus’ Nwoye slumped inside the Stade de la Paix in Bouake after South Africa scored a late penalty on the stroke of full-time to force the game into extra-time.

A politician named Cairo Ojougboh who previously served as a member of the Federal House of Representatives from Delta State also passed on Wednesday after Egyptian referee Amin Mohamed Omar awarded Bafana Bafana the penalty following a VAR review.

An administrator who worked as deputy bursar of Kwara State University, Mr. Ayuba Abdullahi who was reported to have had high blood pressure during the dramatic final minutes of the encounter and he collapsed upon getting home.

The Super Eagles came out victorious in the dramatic encounter after 4-2 win in the penalty shoot-out after goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali saved two spot-kicks.

Nigeria will now face Ivory Coast on Sunday for the coveted Africa Cup of Nations trophy in  Abidjan.

The Super Eagles previously won the title in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
