Son of former Liberia international and current President, Timothy Weah opened the United States of America’s goal account at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar with his first-half goal.
Timothy, whose father is Liberian and African football legend George Weah, handed the USA the lead in their Group B clash against Gareth Bale’s Wales which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The 22-year-old World Cup debutant slotted the ball calmly past goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey for the Welsh side after brilliant work down the middle by Christian Pulisic.
Weah, who is of Liberian descent, rose through the ranks at Paris Saint Germain’s academy in France, before making his debut for the senior team in 2018, following in his father’s [George Weah] footsteps.
The Lille Forward opted to play for the USA’s national men football team, having played at all age-grade levels for ‘The Yanks’.
He turned down offers to play for the French national team, citing his love for the United States and his teammates as reasons for his decision.
The young Weah would hope to continue his fine form in front of goal when the USA face off against England in a Group B clash on Friday at the Al Bayt Stadium in their second game of the competition.
The Gregg Berhalter-led side would be looking to get one over their eternal rivals, England; managing just one draw in their last three encounters.
