Randy Waldrum: NFF to hold talks with Super Falcons coach over contract extension

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has authorised its Technical Committee to begin discussions with Randy Waldrum, the head coach of the Super Falcons, over the possible extension of his current contract with the federation.

The 66-year-old American initially signed a two-year contract with the team in 2021 and subsequently led them to a fourth-place finish in the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco and most recently the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

“We have given the Technical Committee the go-ahead to hold talks with Randy Waldrum as we consider an extension of his current contract with the NFF,” the federation’s president, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, said on Tuesday.

“They have to do this quickly as the team has a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match next week.

“The man has done well by leading the team to an impressive outing at the FIFA World Cup,” he added.

Waldrum led Nigeria to the round of 16 in Oceania after finishing second in Group B, which included Olympic champions Canada, co-hosts and heavyweights Australia, and debutants the Republic of Ireland.

The nine-time African champions drew the Canadians in the opening game, shocked Australia in a 3-2 comeback win, and played out a goalless draw with Ireland to finish the group undefeated and progress to the knockout phase, where they were beaten on penalties by eventual finalist England.

The Super Falcons will face Sao Tome and Principe in a two-legged clash in the qualifiers for the 2024 WAFCON later this month.
