PSG’s Ousmane Dembele named Ligue 1 Player of the Year

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele on Sunday was named the Ligue 1 Player of the Year at the 33rd edition of the French Players’ Union (UNFP) Trophies Gala, having enjoyed arguably the best season of his football career, Afrosport reports.

Dembele, who led PSG to their 13th league title and the Champions League final, has scored 33 goals and provided 13 assists across all competitions this season, including 21 league goals, which keeps him atop the Ligue 1 top scorer’s chart.

The 27-year-old has also scored eight goals in the Champions League this season, and he dethrones five-time winner and former PSG forward Kylian Mbappe to claim the accolade.

Meanwhile, PSG dominated the award categories as Luis Enrique was named Coach of the Year, while Desire Doue claimed the Best Young Player award, having scored six goals and provided six assists in 30 league games.

Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma, however, lost to Lille’s Lucas Chevalier, who won the Best Goalkeeper award.

PSG are on course for an unprecedented treble, with the Parisians having already won the Ligue 1 title—their 11th in 13 years. They will play Inter Milan in the Champions League final on May 31, a week after battling Reims in the French Cup final.
