Premier League: Ex-West Ham midfielder Reo-Coker offers advice on Liverpool title challenge

Darwin Nunez: Liverpool forward handed five-game Uruguay ban by CONMEBOL

Former West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker has suggested that Liverpool need to sign a complete centre forward if they want to compete for the Premier League, Afrosport reports.

Darwin Nunez is the Reds’ only recognised since he was signed from Benfica in 2022 for a total sum of €85 million. The Uruguayan has however been disappointing since joining the English club, registering just 35 goals in 106 appearances.

Before joining Liverpool, the Uruguay international was already a popular name among top clubs in Europe due to his consistency and elegant goal-scoring techniques at Benfica where he netted 48 times in 85 appearances, including 34 goals in 41 competitive games during the 2021-22 campingn.

At Benfica, Nunez’s goal-scoring was quite impressive as the striker netted 48 times in 85 appearances.

“I feel if they could really get that striker. I’ve always been quite hard on [Darwin] Nunez but I feel he’s not going to be that striker that gets 25 goals a season for Liverpool,” Nigel Reo-Coker told the BBC Football Daily podcast.

“If they can get that goal-scoring striker, it would be hard to not say that they could be the favourites for the Premier League title. That’s the one part they are really missing but apart from that it’s hard to look at any weaknesses in this Liverpool side.

Liverpool have been impressive this season as they sit second in the Premier League standings, one point behind Manchester City. The six-time Champions League winners have played 13 matches this season winning 11 of the drawing and losing one, which Reo-Coker is very impressed with.

“I’m very impressed with Liverpool – they’re a professional, well-organised, well-drilled team. Everybody knows their job, everybody knows what is expected of them and everybody is playing for a place,” he added.

“None of the players look like they are comfortable in the team in the sense of, their place is guaranteed week in, week out, and Arne Slot is in charge of that side.

Liverpool will prepare to face Bright & Hove Albion away from home in the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
