Pogba: Marseille sporting director Benatia confirms interest in ex-Juventus midfielder

Olympique Marseille sporting director Benatia has confirmed that the French club are interested in signing Paul Pogba as a free agent next season, Afrosport reports.

The 31-year-old had his contract with Juventus terminated last November after he was hit with a doping ban which will come to an end this month, giving him the chance to return to action next month.

Marseille have been linked with Pogba in recent months, and Benatia, who played for Juventus as a player, confirmed the interest to be true.

“He is a player, a man that both President Longoria and I admire,” the ex-Morocco International told L’Equipe.

“We thought about him, we wanted to do it, but did it make sense to bring in a Pogba who was not yet in shape?

“The risk was to disrupt the balance of the team with a player who wouldn’t have been at his best by the end of the season.

“However, if the opportunity arises, we would be happy to have a player like Pogba who can help us in the next campaign.”

Pogba returned to Juventus for a second time in 2022 from Manchester United, but only made 12 appearances for the Bianconeri as he was hampered by injuries before his doping ban.

A potential move to Marseille will see him move back to France for the first time since 2009 when he was a youth player for Le Havre before moving to Manchester United as a 16-year-old.
