Vieira joins the Italian club having departed French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg by mutual agreement in July 2024.
The former Inter Milan midfielder also managed Nice, Crystal Palace, and Major League Soccer (MLS) side New York City FC.
The 48-year-old will reunite with Italian forward Mario Balotelli, who he managed at Nice during the 2018–19 season.
Genoa are currently 17th in the Serie A standings with 10 points from their opening 12 games, sitting just one point above the relegation zone.
The Grifone will host Cagliari at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium on Sunday, November 24, when club football returns after the international break.
