Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes says he and his teammates must adapt to the ideas brought in by new head coach Ruben Amorim, Afrosport reports.
Fernandes started in Amorim’s first game in charge at United, a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Portuguese midfielder played as part of a front three at Portman Road in the new 3-4-3 system deployed by his compatriot Amorim.
When asked about fitting into Amorim’s new system, Fernandes said he has to try to adapt to a different idea.
“You always have to adapt to different ideas, different positions,” the United No. 8 said. “Even sometimes playing in the same system you have to adapt to different ideas of playing on the ball and off the ball because the manager can ask different things.
“So, it’s not difficult for me to adapt in any position. I’m really aware of what we do in training. I try to absorb everything from every position. Obviously, it’s not possible to get everything, but I try to have an understanding of the game.”
Fernandes, who was talking to reporters ahead of their Europa League match against Bodo/Glimt at Old Trafford on Thursday, also said he is looking to help Amorim by being the leader on the pitch.
“Also, because being the captain, sometimes the manager can give the message from the bench to the pitch because of the noise or whatever,” he added. “And so you have to be able to try to solve the situations together with your team-mates.
“Knowing or having that knowledge of every position, what movements they have to do, what kind of pressure the manager wants us to do. And that’s a little bit also my role.”
The Red Devils are 15th in the Europa League standings with six points from their opening four matches and have to contend with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, who sits 12th with one more point.
