In a very generous act, 34-year-old Spanish striker Lucas Perez paid part of his own transfer fee to seal a move to former club Deportivo La Coruna.

The striker signed a one-and-a-half-year deal for a fourth spell with the third-division club.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Perez reportedly paid around €500,000 of his own transfer fee in a bid to help his former club get back to the top division.

The deal that was announced via the club’s website has become valid since the winter window opened on January 1.

Perez spent three unsuccessful seasons in the Premier League with Arsenal and West Ham before sealing a move to La Liga side Alaves in 2019.

The journeyman also had spells at Elche and Cadiz, the club he signed for in January 2022.

Perez was Cadiz’s leading goalscorer in this season with three goals in 14 La Liga appearances.

A regular in the Spanish top-flight league for the best part of 20 years, Deportivo were relegated to the second division after the 2017-2018 season, then further went down to the third tier in 2020.

They currently sit fourth in the fourth division – four points behind league leaders Cordoba.
