Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from international football after a disappointing outing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The 31-year-old retires with an impressive record of 33 goals and 36 assists in 126 international caps for Belgium.
Since his international debut in 2008, he has represented the Red Devils in two UEFA European Championships and three FIFA World Cups, finishing third in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The Real Madrid forward was unable to inspire the Red Devils in Qatar, resulting in a heartbreaking group-stage exit after a goalless draw against 2018 World Cup finalist Croatia.
In a statement posted on Instagram, the former Chelsea attacker said: “A page turns today… Thank you for your love. Thank you for your unmatched support. Thank you for all this happiness shared since 2008.
“I have decided to put an end to my international career. The succession is ready. I will miss you.”
Hazard retires as the fourth-most capped player in Belgium’s history, behind Jan Vertonghen (145 games), Axel Witsel (130 games), and Toby Alderweireld (127 games).
Hazard’s retirement from international football follows the resignation of Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, moments after their early exit.
The two-time La Liga champion is expected to turn his attention to club football in an effort to earn a spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s team, following a lack of adequate game time due to injuries and poor form.
He has played in just three La Liga matches this season.
