CAF Champions League holders Al Ahly of Egypt were held to a 0-0 draw by South African giants Orlando Pirates in one of the matchday two Group C fixtures played on Saturday, Afrosport reports.
Marcel Koller’s side were left frustrated by the home side who were buoyed by the home support from the fully packed Orlando stadium in the Soweto suburb of Johannesburg.
Despite registering five shots on target compared to their opponent’s two, the Red Devils could not find the breakthrough goal, and despite the introduction of Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau, their fortunes did not change as the Buccaneers held on for a share of the spoils.
The draw sees both sides remain at the top of the Group C with four points apiece, although Al Ahly has a superior goal difference.
Also in Group C, Morocco’s CR Belouizdad defeated Ivorian side Stade D’abidjan 1-0 to move to third on the log with three points.
In Group B, former champions Mamelodi Sundowns played out an exciting 1-1 draw away at FAR Rabat, while Maniema Union also settled for a 1-1 draw against Raja Casablanca.
