American-Nigerian Mmoh suffers Wimbledon defeat, Tiafoe progresses

Michael Mmoh has been knocked out of the 2023 Wimbledon Championship following his straight-sets (7-5, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4) defeat to Maximilian Marterer on Thursday.

The 25-year-old son of Former Nigerian tennis professional Tony Mmoh had beaten Canadian-Togolese and world number 12 Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round in four sets but faced a stern second-round test against his German opponent.

The first set saw each player hold serve until the 12th game when world number 119 Mmoh lost his serve, allowing Marterer to take the set.

Mmoh had two break points in the first and seventh game of the second set but Marterer saved both of them to take it into a tiebreak which he won 7-5.

Mmoh lost serve in the first game of the third set and blew away his chance to break back in the third game where he lost two break points. Marterer held firm to see out the set in 40 minutes and set up a third-round clash with Kazakh Alexander Bublik who defeated American J. J. Wolf in straight sets.

American-Sierra Leonean 10th seed Frances Tiafoe made it through to the third round with a straight sets 7-6 (13-11), 6-4, 6-2 victory over Dominic Stricker of Switzerland in two hours, five minutes. The first set took almost an hour as both players held serve and the resultant tiebreak went past the seven-point mark.

In other results on Thursday, world number 16 Lorenzo Musetti won his second-round match in straight sets (6-4, 6-3, 6-1) to Jaume Munar ranked 109th in the world. There were also victories for Alexander Zverev, Stan Wawrinka and seventh seed Andrey Rublev.

There was however an upset for fourth seed Casper Ruud who lost in five sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 0-6) to American Liam Broady ranked 142nd in the world. American ninth seed Taylor Fritz also lost in five sets (6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 2-6) to Swedish-Ethiopian Mikael Ymer.

On the women’s side, African-American duo Alycia Parks and Sloane Stephens lost their respective second-round games to Ana Bogdan and Donna Vekic while fourth seed Jessica Pegula, Sofia Kenin and 2018 Wimbledon runner-up and former world number one Victoria Azarenka progressed in straight sets. Caroline Garcia and Beatriz Haddad Maia needed four sets to get past Romanian Jaqueline Cristian and Canadian Leylah Fernandez.
