AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Nigeria v Libya – All you need to know & how to watch the game

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles rely on Guinea-Bissau’s own goal to progress

The Super Eagles have so far had a good start to life in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with victory over Benin Republic in Uyo and a draw against Rwanda.

Meanwhile, Libya’s Mediterranean Knights have endured a contrasting start with a draw against Rwanda’s Amavubi and a 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs of Benin.

Nigeria, who are atop the Group D standings with four points, have Benin (3 points) and Rwanda (2 points) breathing down their necks, and the three-time African champions will be hoping to make their two games against Libya count to possibly increase their lead at the top.

The Super Eagles, led by interim manager Augustine Eguavoen, will be heading into their fifth meeting against Libya, who are ranked 33rd in Africa.

Players to Watch Out For

Nigeria

Ademola Lookman: Lookman, who was recently nominated for the Ballon d’Or, was Nigeria’s joint top scorer at AFCON 2023 with three goals.

The 26-year-old has eight goals and four assists in 25 matches for the Super Eagles and will be looking to add to the brace he scored against Benin Republic on opening day.

Victor Boniface: Boniface has been in good form this season with six goals and one assist in nine matches in all competitions.

He has, however, not been able to replicate the same form for Nigeria, drawing blanks in all his eight international caps, and will be hoping he kick starts a run of good form for the Super Eagles against Libya.

William Troost-Ekong: One of Nigeria’s best performers at the AFCON, Troost-Ekong, was named the MVP at the tournament in Ivory Coast.

The Al-Kholood defender has made 73 appearances for Nigeria, scoring seven goals, and his return to the Super Eagles’ defence marked two clean sheets in their opening two games.

Libya

Ahmed Kraouaa: The 35-year-old forward, who plays for Al Ahli Tripoli in Libya hasn’t scored any goals yet in the qualifiers. Since he made his debut in 2023, Kraouaa has registered four goals and one assist in 10 matches.

Omar Al-Khoja: At 24-year-old, Kwizera, who plays for Al-Suwaihli, has scored three goals in 25 international matches since he made his debut for Libya in September 2021.
