AFCON 2023: Big blow for Nigeria as Boniface withdraws due to injury

Europa League: Boniface scores as Leverkusen hit five past Qarabag

Nigeria have been dealt a huge injury blow ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with Victor Bonfiace’s withdrawal due to an injury.

The Bayer Leverkusen star did not feature in the Super Eagles’ friendly games against Dubai-based club Al Gharbia on Sunday and AFCON-bound Guinea on Monday.

The 23-year-old confirmed the injury setback by sending his best wishes to the rest of his internal teammates on Monday.

Boniface has been in red-hot form in the German Bundesliga this season with a contribution of 10 goals and seven assists for unbeaten Xabi Alonso’s side who sit atop of the league table.

His withdrawal comes as a worry for Jose Peseiro with Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho still in a race against time to be fit for Nigeria’s opening game against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, January 14.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to be in Lagos on Tuesday for a farewell dinner organized by the Lagos State Government before they depart for the continental showpiece in Ivory Coast on Wednesday, January 10.
