UCL: Arsenal in seventh heaven as Nwaneri, Odegaard star in first leg rout of PSV

Arsenal made history on Tuesday night at the Philips Stadium in their 7-1 rout of PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash, Afrosport reports.

The Gunners were in blistering form as they became the first team in the history of the Champions League to score at least seven goals away from home in a knockout stage match.

Arsenal have found it tough to find the back of the net recently since losing striker Kai Havertz to a season-ending injury, with only two goals in their previous three games.

The North London side doubled their lead three minutes later through teenager Ethan Nwaneri, who rifled the ball home from close range.

Mikel Merino continues his fine form in front of goal, with the Spaniard getting his name on the scoresheet in the 31st minute, finding the bottom corner after some shocking defending by the PSV rearguard.

PSV drew one back just before the halftime break as Dutch forward Noa Lang buried his penalty kick after referee Jesus Gil Manzano penalised Thomas Partey for a foul in the box.

Arsenal, however, stood steadfast, with Martin Odegaard restoring their three-goal lead just two minutes into the second half restart.

Belgium international Leandro Trossard joined the party a minute later, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Benitez after some nice interchange with Riccardo Calafiori on the left side.

Odegaard made it six for the Gunners in the 73rd minute, before turning provider for the final goal scored by Calafiori, who slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.

The Gunners scored seven goals in a European game for the first time since October 2007, when they defeated Slavia Prague 7-0. The result all but sealed a round of 16 berth for Arsenal, with Arteta’s side hosting the return leg at the Emirates Stadium next week.

Meanwhile, in the other game of the night, Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw by Lille at Signal Iduna Park.

Karim Adeyemi’s brilliant 22nd-minute strike was cancelled out by Hakon Haraldsson in the 68th minute to set up a crunch second leg encounter in France.
