Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho is in the news once again after receiving a red card in the Europa League as the Turkish club played out a 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Thursday.
The Portuguese coach was given his marching orders in the second half by referee Clement Turpin after the French official failed to award Fenerbahce a penalty after Bright Osayi-Samuel was brought down by United midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
In utter frustration, the Fenerbahce bench led by Mourinho protested against the verdict as he charged down the touchline to express his disappointment regarding the decision.
However, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager believes he has an already existing unhealthy relationship with officials and is not going to appeal the decision.
He further cited the 2023 Europa League final where he was handed a four-game European ban for abusing referee Anthony Taylor after he failed to award his Roma side a penalty.
“If I appeal I will get six months,” Mourinho stated. “Since the Sevilla-Roma final there is nothing to do. That is why the future is better without European competition, so I don’t get upset.”
Mourinho jokingly remarked that in the near future, he would be looking at taking a job in a club that does not compete in European competitions.
“The best thing I have to do is when I leave Fenerbahce, I go to a club that doesn’t play in UEFA competition,” he said. “So, if any club in England from the bottom of the table needs a coach in two years, I’m ready to go.”
Mourinho’s Fenerbahce currently sit 14th in the Europa League standings with five points in three games. The Turkish club will head to the Netherlands to take on AZ Alkmaar in their next European fixture.
