2023 African Games: Brume claims gold, Ochonogor settles for bronze in women’s long jump

Team Nigeria has claimed another set of medals in athletics at the ongoing 13th African Games in Accra, as Ese Brume and Prestina Ochonogor clinched podium finishes in the women’s long jump event on Thursday.

Brume won the gold medal for Nigeria with her first round jump at the University of Ghana Legon Stadium, where she led with her 6.92 metre effort.

The 28-year-old, who is also the current long jump commonwealth champion, successfully defended the title she won at the African Games five years ago in Rabat in 2019, to become a two-time African champion.

Ochonogor, on the other hand, settled for the bronze medal in her international debut, as she finished in third place with a jump of 6.67m, behind Burkina Faso’ Marthe Koala, who won the silver medal with her second attempt of 6.81m.

Ruth Usoro, the other Nigerian athlete, who partook in the women’s long jump event, missed out on a podium finish.

The 26-year-old, who won a gold medal in the women’s triple jump event in the Games in Accra, settled for fourth place with a jump of 6.62m.
