It was a one-two finish for Nigeria in the women’s discus throw final as the duo of Obiageri Amaechi and Chioma Onyekwere claimed the gold and silver medals, respectively, in the ongoing 13th edition of the African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Amaechi dug deep with her final attempt, achieving a throw of 58.93 metres, a new personal best (PB), to win the gold medal for Nigeria at the UGH Legon Stadium on Thursday.

The 25-year-old, who won the bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, was joined on the podium by compatriot Onyekwere, the gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games, whose fifth attempt in Thursday’s final helped her clinch the silver medal after a throw of 58.03m.
Cameroon’s Nora Atim Monie threw for 56.11m to finish third and win the bronze medal, while Nigeria’s national champion Ashley Anumba threw for 54.88m to finish fourth for the second consecutive time at the African Games after doing so in Rabat in 2019, and miss out on a podium finish.
