Barcelona have announced that Xavi will not continue as manager after Sunday’s La Liga game with Sevilla.
The 44-year-old former Spain midfielder had previously announced in January that he would leave the Catalan giants at the end of the season but he was persuaded to stay by club president Joan Laporta last month.
However, recent comments by Xavi in which he spoke about Barcelona’s financial difficulties did not go down well with Laporta.
“FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world,” read a club statement.
“Xavi Hernandez will be coaching the team for the last time in Sunday’s game away to Sevilla.
“During the course of the next few days, FC Barcelona will be making an announcement regarding the new first team structure.”
Xavi was appointed in 2021 and signed a contract extension last year until the end of the 2024-25 season. He led Barcelona to the 2022-23 La Liga title as well as the Supercopa de Espana.
According to reports, former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick is poised to take over as the new manager.
The 52-year-old has been without a job since he was dismissed as Germany head coach in September last year.
Barcelona are guaranteed of finishing at the 2023-24 La Liga season in second place regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s game with Sevilla.
