F1: Hamilton tops red-flagged Monaco GP practice session

Lewis Hamilton topped a red-flagged opening practice session in his Mercedes at the F1 Monaco Grand Prix on Friday.

The seven-time world champion edged McLaren’s Oscar Piastri to the fastest time on soft tyres by just 0.029 seconds, with Mercedes teammate George Russell in third place.

The session was however halted in the closing stages by a red flag after Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu hit the wall and lost part of his front wing.

Lando Norris was fourth in the second McLaren while home hero Charles Leclerc was fifth.

Fernando Alonso was sixth ahead of Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll followed by the RB duo of Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo, with Carlos Sainz rounding out the top 10.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen had a difficult session after brushing the barriers and finished in 11th ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez.
