World Athletics Championships: Nigeria’s woes continue after disappointing 4x100m relay events

Team Nigeria continued their lacklustre performance at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest with woeful results in 4x100m relay events on Friday.

Nigeria had representatives in the men and women’s categories but they both failed to qualify into the final stage to compete for medals.

The quartet of Favour Ashe, Seye Ogunlewe, Usheoritse Itsekiri and Alaba Akintola had a decent race in the men’s category as they finished fifth in their Heat.

Despite the narrow miss from the final, Nigeria men’s team achieved a Season Best time of 38.20 seconds.

For the Women’s team, the race ended at the start as Justina Eyakpobeyan couldn’t pass the baton to Favour Ofili and they registered a DNF (Did Not Finish) at the end.

The Heat was dominated by the United States of America and the Ivory Coast who set a new African record of 41.90 seconds.

Since the biennial world championships started on August 19, Tobi Amusan has been the only Nigeria athlete to qualify for final of an event.

The world record holder finished sixth in the women’s 100m hurdles final on Thursday.

Nigeria’s final event in Budapest will be the women’s 4x400m semi-final that comes up later on Saturday evening, 7.55pm (West African Time).
