Nigeria’s under-20 women’s football team, the Falconets, lost 1-0 to Mexico in their final friendly match ahead of the opening ceremony of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
The match was played at the Club Banco de la República field in Bogota, the same venue Nigeria defeated Australia in a tune-up match last Friday.
Alejandra Lomeli scored the only goal of the match with a volley in the 20th minute that gave Mexico the narrow victory.
Christopher Danjuma’s ladies were inspired by the presence of the top executive members of the Nigeria Football Federation including president Ibrahim Guasau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and head of women’s football, Amina Daura.
Despite the defeat, Gusua encouraged the Falconets to set their sights on the ultimate glory in Colombia as they get ready to face Germany, Venezuela and Korea Republic in Group D of the tournament.
Nigeria, two-time silver medallists in the U20 Women’s World Cup, will begin their campaign against Korea Republic at the 10,000-seat Estadio Metropolitano de Techo on September 2, and then take on Germany and Venezuela on September 4 and September 7 respectively.
