U-20 AFCON: Ivory Coast withdraws from hosting duties

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Friday named two Nigerian referees as part of its list of officials for the 2025 under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Afrosport reports.

CAF has selected Aminu Shamtali Shuaibu and Muhammadu Yakubu as part of the 14-referee delegation for the tournament, which is now set to be held in Egypt following Ivory Coast’s withdrawal.

The African football body also revealed the names of 15 assistant referees, 10 video assistant referees (VAR), and three assessors to ensure a free and fair competition.

The 18th edition of the biennial tournament is expected to commence on Sunday, 27 April, with the final to be played on Sunday, 18 May.

The Flying Eagles will fly Nigeria’s flag at the tournament, having been drawn in Group B with newly appointed hosts Egypt as well as Morocco and South Africa.
