U17 WWC: Flamingos arrive Pretoria for South Africa qualifying tie

Nigeria’s Under-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, have been drawn in Group D ahead of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Afrosport reports.

The official draw for the tournament took place on Wednesday at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Rabat, Morocco, and was conducted by the duo of Fatiha Laassiri and Doha El Madani, past and present members of the Atlas Lionesses, Morocco’s national women’s team.

The Flamingos, allocated to Pot 1 before Wednesday’s draw, will battle Canada, debutants Samoa, and 2012 winners France in Group D.

Bankole Olowookere’s side finished third in the 2022 edition in India but crashed out in the quarterfinals last year in the Dominican Republic.

This year’s event, which will see 24 countries compete for the first time, is the ninth edition of the Mundial and the first to be held in Africa.

Hosts Morocco are joined in Group A by Brazil, Costa Rica, and Italy, while record winners and defending champions Korea DPR are in Group B alongside Cameroon, 2018 runners-up Mexico, and debutants Netherlands.

Group C comprises China, Ecuador, the United States, and first-timers Norway; Colombia, debutants Cote d’Ivoire, South Korea, and two-time winners Spain are in Group E; and the quartet of Japan, New Zealand, Paraguay, and Zambia will lock horns in Group F.

The tournament will take place from 17 October to 8 November, and the top two teams from each group will advance to the Round of 16, as well as the four best third-placed teams.
