U17 AFCON: Senegal become first team to secure quarter-final spot

Senegal have become the first country to  advance into the quarter-final stage of the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria.

The Teranga Cubs affirmed their dominance in African football by defeating host country, Algeria 3-0 in their second Group A match.

Captain Amara Diouf led the West Africans to victory with his man-of-the-match display that saw him score two goals and provided an assist for third goal.

Diouf broke the deadlock at the Nelson Mandela Stadium just on the stroke of halftime with his header off Lassana Traore’s corner-kick.

After the restart, the doubled the lead with effort from the penalty spo after Omar Salk was brought down by the Algerians.

It didn’t end there for Senegal as second-half substitute Mamadou Sawane benefitted from Diouf’s assist to put the icing on the cake with five minutes left on the clock.

The win marked the first time Senegal progressed from the group stage of the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.

The Teranga Cubs’ next Group A fixture will be against Somalia on Friday while Algeria will be focused on beating Congo to secure an automatic qualification to the last-eight stage.
