The Burkina U-17 national team claimed the bronze medal at the 2023 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-1 victory over neighbours Mali in the third/fourth place playoff in Annaba on Thursday.
The Burkinabe lost 5-4 on penalties to Senegal in the semi-final after a 1-1 draw in regular time while the Malians were beaten 6-5 on penalties after a goalless 90 minutes.
Thursday’s encounter at the 19 May 1956 Stadium was therfore for pride and it was Cheick Camara that gave Burkina Faso the lead in the 26th minute from the penalty spot.
It remained that way until the 47th minute when Appolinaire Bougma doubled the Burkinabe’s lead, with Ousmane Camara providing the assist.
Mali’s consultation goal in the 58th minute when Ibrahim Diarra found Mamadou Doumbia to finish off.

Burkina Faso and Mali will next turn their attention to the FIFA U-17 World Cup taking place in November at a yet-to-be-named host country after original hosts Peru were stripped of their hosting rights.
The 2023 Under-17 AFCON will conclude with Friday’s final between Senegal and Morocco at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.
