Tome departs Spain role after Euro 2025 final loss, Bermudez named new boss

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has parted ways with Montse Tome as head coach of the women’s national team, opting not to renew her contract, Afrosport reports.

The decision comes in the wake of Spain’s failure to win the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 last month after losing 3-1 to England on penalties. The reigning world champions were held to a 1-1 in regulation time after Alessia Russo cancelled out Mariona Caldentey’s opener.

The 43-year-old, who has a contract until 31 August, faced criticism for her substitutions during the final – notably the decision to withdraw Barcelona midfielder and two-time Ballon d’Or winner in the 71st minute, with the match still at 1-1.

“The Board of Directors of the Royal Spanish Football Federation would like to express its gratitude for Montse Tome’s work, professionalism, and dedication in her various roles during her time as a member of the national teams at the RFEF, particularly during her time as senior national team coach,” the RFEF said in a statement on Monday.

Tome guided Spain to UEFA Women’s Nations League glory in February 2024, having previously served as Jorge Vilda’s assistant during their triumphant 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign.

She made history in September 2023 when she became the first woman to manage the Spanish women’s national team following Vilda’s dismissal.

The RFEF have appointed former Spain international Sonia Bermudez as her successor. The 40-year-old, who recently coached Spain’s under-23s, will be assisted by Iraia Iturregi.

Under Tome, Spain returned to the top of the FIFA Women’s ranking, leapfrogging the United States into No. 1. They will return to action in October against Sweden in the semi-finals of the Nations League.
