Sevilla vs Roma: Five Africans gunning for UEFA Europa League title

Five African players are aiming for European glory on Wednesday night when Sevilla tackle AS Roma in the UEFA Europa League final in Budapest.

Sevilla have Morocco duo of Yassine Bounou and Youssef En-Nesyri, and Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye in their books while Guinea’s Mady Camara and Gambia forward Ebrima Darboe are in Roma squad.

Yassine Bounou (Morocco)

The 32-year-old has played in each of Sevilla’s games in the secondary European club competition following their exit from the UEFA Champions League.

Bounou managed to keep two clean sheets in five matches (Manchester United and PSV) and his presence will be crucial for the Spanish club who are aiming for a record seventh Europa League trophy.

The Wydad Casablanca shot-stopper was part of the Sevilla squad that lifted the Europa League title back in the 2019-20 season.

Mady Camara (Guinea)

Camara is a key fixture in Roma’s midfield formation and his combativeness coupled with agility in the middle of the park has earned playing minutes in six Europa League matches he has played in Jose Mourinho’s team.

The Guinea star is currently on a season-long loan from Olympiacos and he has made 21 appearances in all competitions for the Italian club.

Pape Gueye (Senegal)

The Teranga Lions midfielder is closer to enjoying his first taste of success in Europe in his first season in Seville.

The 24-year-old is registered in the Europa League, but has not featured in any European competition since his loan signing from Marseille in January. He has, however, made his mark in La Liga with 15 appearances under his belt and a goal to his credit.

Ebrima Darboe (Gambia)

The 21-year-old is on the brink of winning back-to-back European titles after playing a part in Roma’s Europa Conference League success last season.

Darboe is yet to play a game for Roma this season but he is among the squad that travelled to Budapest. Since his promotion to Roma’s first-team in October 2019, he has played 11 matches in all competitions.

Youssef En-Nesyri (Morocco)

The 25-year-old striker is one of the attacking options Jose Mendilibar rely on to lead Sevilla’s frontline at the Puskas Arena. The Moroccan talisman has returned four goals in eight Europa League games so far
