Regragui reveals Morocco’s World Cup dream

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has set his sights on lifting the 2022 FIFA World Cup after they saw off European heavyweights Spain on penalties in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.

After a goalless 120 minutes of football, the Moroccans were victorious, winning 3-0 after goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made two fantastic saves in the penalty shoot-out.

The victory powered Morocco through to the quarter-finals for the first time, where they will take on Portugal.

It will also be the fourth time an African country has made the last-eight in the quadrennial showpiece after Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana.

“We want to win the World Cup,” Regragui told FIFA +. “Why shouldn’t we dream? Dreaming is human nature. If you don’t have a dream, you’ll never achieve anything.”

He added: “Since the start of the competition, we’ve been playing with a team that’s not 100 percent, that’s why it’s even more extraordinary.

“We’ve managed to create a family, and we feel that we have a people behind us.

“If you had told me before starting that we would face Croatia, Belgium and Spain without losing a match, I would have signed for it.

“Big congratulations to the players, they did something extraordinary, in the frenzy of energy, in the desire not to let go of this match.”

Morocco remain unbeaten at the 2022 World Cup having topped Group F with seven points ahead of Croatia, Belgium and Canada and they have conceded just a goal so far.
