Ahead of 2024-25 Premier League season, some teams are splashing the cash to beef up their squads while others are being cautious with their transfers due to financial regulations involving Profit and Sustainability and Financial Fair Play.
But of those most expensive Premier League
transfers confirmed so far, who is the best value for money? Afrosport explores.
Dominic Solanke (£65 million to Tottenham Hotspur)
Solanke became the seventh most expensive English footballer ever, following a £65million switch to Tottenham from AFC Bournemouth.
The former Chelsea prodigy became a club record signing for Spurs after he put pen to paper on a six-year deal.
Last season, the 26-year-old netted 19 goals for the Cherries, helping them secure a 12th place finish in the Premier League.
Leny Yoro (£58.9 million to Manchester United)
Yoro completed his move from French club Lille in a deal worth up to £58.9 million.
Yoro signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford with the option of a further 12 months.
The French centre-back however underwent a surgery on a broken foot injury he suffered in pre-season and is expected to be out of action for approximately three months.
The 18-year-old’s absence is a huge blow for United, who had shown a lot of promise in the few minutes he played for the club.
Pedro Neto (£54 million to Chelsea)
Chelsea paid the sum of £54 million to sign Pedro Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The payments were broken up into an initial £51.4 million plus £2.6 million in add-ons, with the Portuguese winger signing a seven-year deal that will keep him with the Blues until 2031.
Neto who was paraded at half time at Stamford Bridge during Sunday’s pre-season friendly with Inter Milan will wear the number 19 shirt for Chelsea this season.
Amadou Onana (£50 million to Aston Villa)
Aston Villa signed Belgian defensive midfielder Amadou Onana from fellow Premier League side Everton for a reported fee that was worth £50 million.
Onana became Villa’s second-most expensive signing of all time and their eighth signing of the summer transfer window after the arrivals of Ian Maatsen, Barrenechea, Samuel Iling-Junior, Barkley, Lewis Dobbin, Cameron Archer and Jaden Philogene.
Having played in both the Bundesliga with Hamburg and the Premier League with Everton, Onana has experience in highly competitive environments and is expected to be the lead box-to-box midfielder in Unai Emery’s team.
Matthijs de Ligt (£42.9 million to Manchester United)
Manchester United completed the signings of Bayern Munich Matthijs de Ligt as part of double swoop alongside Noussair Mazraoui earlier this week.
United who agreed a £42.9 million fee for De Ligt is expected to give him his debut on Friday when the Red Devils begin their Premier League campaign at home to Fulham.
The 25-year-old player signed a five-year contract played, and previously played under United boss Erik ten Hag at Ajax, where they won the Eredivisie in 2019.
