Premier League: FA to hand ‘formal warning’ to Guehi over rainbow armband message

Premier League: FA to hand ‘formal warning’ to Guehi over rainbow armband message

The Football Association (FA) will not sanction England international Marc Guehi for his actions in the Premier League last weekend, Afrosport reports.

Guehi inscribed the words “I love Jesus” on his rainbow captain’s armband during Crystal Palace’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Premier League clubs will show their support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport by taking part in charity Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign between 29 November and 5 December. The two teams’ captains are expected to wear the rainbow armbands as part of their support for the campaign.

The FA, however, will reportedly hand a formal warning to Geuhi and Palace, reminding them that religious messaging on their kit is prohibited.

Rule A4 of the FA’s kit and advertising guidelines forbids the “appearance on, or incorporation in, any item of clothing, football boots, or other equipment of any religious message.”.

Guehi, 24, who is a devout Christian, has always been vocal about his faith, as his father serves as a church minister.

The Ivory Coast-born defender conceded the own goal that put Newcastle in the lead in the 53rd minute, but a stoppage time header from Daniel Munoz helped Palace salvage a home draw.

Guehi, however, was not the only player that had an issue with the armbands, as Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy did not wear the rainbow armband in their 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, citing religious beliefs.

The Egyptian, however, has the backing of his club, who said although they are committed to “being a fully inclusive club that welcomes everyone”, they respect the decision of Morsy.

Both Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace will face off in the Premier League on Tuesday at Portman Road.
