‘Postecoglou knows what he’s doing’ – Ex-Tottenham defender Bassong

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Sebastien Bassong believes Ange Postecoglou knows what he is doing and has backed him to turn things around at the club, Afrosport reports.

Spurs have had mixed from this season with just one win in their last eight competitive games (D3 L4) which has seen them drop to 11th in the Premier League standings.

Ex-Cameroon international Bassong, who played for Spurs between 2009 and 2012, asserted that Postecoglou is doing his best to bring silverware to the club which has eluded them for the past 16 years.

“When they brought in Ange Postecoglou, they knew what they are going to get,” Bassong told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It’s someone that has a real DNA in the way he plays. Some people would say that he is stubborn, but I think he he knows what he is trying to do. He’s trying to bring silverware into Tottenham.

“It’s been difficult, he hasn’t been lucky with injuries but that’s part of the game, you can’t really blame injuries, you know that they may happen.

“I think they’ve got to stick together, that’s what he does. He shows resilience, he shows that he’s in the mix, in the battle with his players and for the club, he shows character. It’s not the best time but I hope it’s going to get better for them.”

Bassong also backed Postecoglou for calling out Timo Werner for his performance in the 1-1 Europa League draw with Rangers on Thursday, saying it was “unacceptable”.

“I agree with him [Postecoglou on Timo Werner]. I know we are in football and the manager has to protect players, but when you are a senior player and leader, you’re experienced, you’ve got to be held accountable,” Bassong continued.

“And I think Timo Werner would not be unhappy and think that that’s unfair, he can take it. He can take the criticism and that should trigger him to get better, because at the end of the day, when you’re in a situation, you cannot hide.

“You’ve got to really take responsibility, so for me I totally understand that he [Postecoglou] got vocal about Timo Werner’s performance because that performance was really not at the level he should have been. So at some point, take responsibility, be accountable and move on.”

Tottenham will hope to get back to winning ways when they travel to struggling Southampton on Sunday before taking on Manchester United in the EFL Cup quarter-finals next Thursday.
