Opening Swiatek match at Billie Jean King Cup postponed due to weather alert

The opening match of the Billie Jean King Cup in Malaga has been postponed due to bad weather alert amidst recent floods in Spain, Afrosport reports.

The Polish world number two, Iga Swiatek, was set to represent her country in the opening match, against Spain, after being added to the squad last minute despite not being named on the list of participants in September.

The tie has now been pushed back to Friday based on a decision by authorities to assure the safety of the participants. The International Tennis Federation said in a statements said per Flashscore.com: “This decision has been made based on guidance from the relevant authorities to ensure the health and safety of all participants and attendees.”

The end of October saw Spain, the host country, witness devastating floods in the Valencia region. This urged the country’s meteorological agency to places parts of Valencia and Catalonia on orange alert.

The recent events in Spain have been bad news for the world of tennis as both the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup will be held in Malaga this month.
