Onuachu nets brace as Trabzonspor edge closer in sealing European spot

Turkish Super Lig: Onuachu nets brace in Trabzonspor win over Konyaspor

Paul Onuachu found the back of the net twice as Trabzonspor recorded a 3-0 Turkish Super Lig win over Istanbulspor on Sunday to move closer to an European qualification spot for next season.

The lanky Nigerian forward wasted no time in putting the Black Sea Storm in front in the sixth minute with a powerful header from an Edin Visca corner before doubling the lead moments later with a clinical finish off another assist from Visca.

The brace by Onuachu was scored in the space of 67 seconds and it was the first time since January 2016 (against Bursaspor) that Trabzonspor scored two goals inside the opening 10 minutes in a Super Lig match.

It also moved the 6 ft 7 striker, who is on loan from Southampton, to 14 Super Lig goals this season, putting him joint sixth on the goalscorers charts, nine strikes behind leading marksman Mauro icardi with two more round of fixtures to go.

Visca made it a hat-trick of assists by feeding Thomas Meunier for the third and final goal four minutes into the second half.

The result sees Trabzonspor maintain third place on the log, three points clear of Istanbul Basaksehir whom they face next.

Victory at the Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadium will guarantee their place in the qualification round of the Europa League next season.
