Olympics: Nigeria’s Opeyori secures historic qualification for badminton event

Africa’s badminton champion, Anuoluwapo Opeyori has secured a ticket for the men’s singles badminton event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed Opeyori’s qualification after his participation in various qualifying championships.

The announcement that was made over the weekend made the four-time African champion the first Nigerian player to qualify for back-to-back men’s singles event at the Olympics.

Opeyori won gold in the men’s badminton event at the African Games earlier this year and he has stamped his authority in the sport since 2019, clinching four African titles and two gold medals at the African Games.

Meanwhile, President of Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbiv described Opeyori’s qualification for Paris 2024 as a historic achievement that buttress their quest for producing world class talents in Nigeria.

Orbih also assured that the BFN will support Opeyori’s preparations for the Olympics by facilitating his training tours before the Games begin on July 26.
